GREETINGS, I have not posted here in a very long time, for which I apologize. Soon after I made my last posting, my mother unexpectedly passed away, which was a shock and a terrible hardship for my family and myself.

During that time, I was overburdened with moving to a new home, while trying to fix up both the new house and repairing the old house, which had fallen into disrepair. I simply hadn't had the heart to blog, as it was such a sad and difficult time, and I lost my almost daily habit of writing and photographing.

Many people have asked me to take this up again, and I thank everyone who has giving me support, encouragement, and prayers.Mark S. The German roots at St. Francis de Sales are deep, reaching back to the German immigrants of St. Louis, who built this church in 1867, and rebuilt it after a tornado destroyed the first in 1896. The present church building was dedicated on November 26, 1908.

Advent will be here soon. As the new liturgical year unfolds before us, what a great blessing it will be to be immersed in the unfathomable spiritual riches of Holy Mother Church! In the midst of Advent is Gaudete Sunday, whose theme, “Rejoice!”, will fill our hearts with joy as we anticipate the coming of our Blessed Savior.

More than a fundraiser, the Oratory’s Gaudete Gala, now in its fourth year, is a unique and festive musical expression of the joy of Advent, and the gratitude for the blessings of the sacred liturgy. The Gala will give the Oratory faithful and clergy an opportunity to share the Church’s rich Sacred Music tradition – something we experience every Sunday - with one another, with our friends and family, and with our city community at large. Featuring the choirs of the Oratory under the direction of Mr. Botkins, the Gala will also highlight the wonderful talents developed through the Oratory’s Sacred Music Program in the past nine years. All proceeds from the Gala will be used to support the Sacred Music Program.

Artisans carefully working Summer 2014

Lauds. The first light of the day has penetrated the stained glass windows of the Oratory, bringing the saints and angels into the sanctuary in an array of colors: reds, blues and greens. By Compline, the ever-present images in windows recede into the shadows amidst the prayers of the Oratory community, waiting again for Lauds and the first light of morning.

As illuminated decorations of churches since the Middle Ages, stained glass windows have been a part of the rhythmic daily life of the Church. St. Francis de Sales Oratory has been blessed with many well-crafted windows that beautify the interior of the church, highlighting various saints throughout the day with the movement of light and time. They are part of the distinctive attributes that make this church the “Cathedral of South Saint Louis.”

Stained glass windows are known to withstand the test of time, but never without periodic repair and restoration. Our windows are close to 100 years old; weathering and the ravage of time have made repairs an unavoidable task for us.

Within the last five years, several windows were so badly damaged by storms that decisive actions had to be taken to preserve them. In December 2009, a window in the choir loft had to be removed and stored until suitable repairs can be made.

Then last winter, the beautiful window in the sanctuary, featuring Sts. Jerome and Gregory, was so damaged by the storm that it had to be repaired immediately. Working with the Emil Frei and Associates, the original crafters of our windows in the last century, it took several months of work to complete the repairs, but the process has gained us many insights into the methodology we will need to restore all our historic windows in the future.

Typical of windows of this age, the level of restoration depended on the condition of the glass and support structure, and, unavoidably, budgetary constraints. The Frei experts found the outer protective glass and the glazing had deteriorated badly from normal wear and tear, and the supporting terra cotta mullions were cracked and failing, thus unable to completely support the glass. Instead of rebuilding the terra cotta support for this glass, a larger, thicker protective glass was installed farther out from the stained glass and a new support constructed, thereby retaining the architectural quality without overloading the terra cotta mullions. Both the inside stained glass and the outside protective glass were cleaned and re-glazed.

This repair also has a large thermal benefit since a recent study of the heating and cooling needs of the church building has shown that the windows, by far, are the worst contributor to heat loss in winter and would be detrimental to any attempt to air condition in the summer. By moving the protective glass farther away and using thicker glass material, there will be a significant improvement to the obvious thermal inadequacies of the building.

In addition to structural integrity that is leak-proof, the restoration has made a big difference in the appearance of the window from inside the sanctuary: clearer, brighter, and more vibrant. The brighter Jerome-Gregory window can now serve as a model for the repairs that we will need to do on all of our iconic windows. We will work with Frei to determine the next window that is in most need of repair.

Update on the last matching gift of $4,300.00: There is still an opportunity to help with this generous initiative.

It is said that music is the handmaid of the liturgy, and that this bond has propelled the musical arts to great heights, from medieval times to the present day.

Since 2005, the Sacred Music Program at St. Francis de Sales Oratory has aimed, in our small way, to reflect this timeless bond, allowing the Liturgy to inform, guide, and inspire the creativity of everyone involved in the program, from the youngest chorister to the most experienced performer.

The students learned about the history and progression of chant to its mastery at Solesmes, in Abbé Walter’s class, as well as how to sing the chant beautifully. Along with the captivating History of Rome and the early Church, Mr. Reidy took the class into some of the basics of the Latin language leading up to an exciting scavenger hunt using Latin commands. Along with daily Mass and confessions, Canon Avis also provided spiritual conferences for all of the students focusing on practicing virtues such as prudence and humility.
Aside from the camp’s music program, the campers were also able to do some fun activities guided by the four camp counselors and our newest addition to the camp staff as sacristan, Abbé Alex. Some of the engaging activities played this year were blind dodgeball, football, soccer, volleyball, and capture the flag, during which, even some of the staff joined in the fun. On Friday night the camp had a farewell party with a student talent show, fun games, treats, and finally a line dance conducted by Miss Ashley Hayworth, one of the camp counselers. It was really neat to see all of the friendships formed throughout the course of the week and the good camaraderie present among the campers in general.

During the entire camp, the classes and activities all presented the same theme of giving God greater glory. Whether we were singing as the voice of the Church, attending Mass, chanting the litany of the Sacred Heart, saying the Holy Rosary at night, practicing at rehearsal, or simply tossing a football to one another, it seemed as if we were always giving to God and continuously praying. To me, having so many likeminded Catholic musicians come together with the mutual intention of offering their talents to God is the most beautiful aspect of the camp.

Also, the campers annually hold a recital for the Ursuline Nuns after learning the camp repertoire every year. As one of the campers, it has always been a great pleasure to be able to give the Ursuline’s this unique treat which they always look forward to every year. This is just another way the choir camp allows the youthful singers to use their musical talent for God.

At the Saturday morning High Mass, all of the camp singers offered to God some of the most exquisite music I have ever heard. Clearly everyone put forth their best effort for God and really took to heart all of the good instruction taught by the staff throughout the week. And as I commented to others, “it was truly the best sounding camp I’ve been to so far.”

On the whole, the many new friendships made, the virtues of the Catholic Faith visibly practiced, and the musical excellence attained was very edifying to me and I hope it will continue to grow and edify others in the years to come for the greater glory of God!
This year, in addition to Florence where four French deacons will be ordained to the priesthood, St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis, MO, will be honored to be the setting for the ordination of four American deacons, by His Eminence, Raymond Cardinal Burke. This important event in the life of the Church will take place here at the Oratory, on Tuesday, August 5, at 10:00AM.

The following day (August 6), the Oratory will again be honored to participate in the grace-filled First Masses of the newly ordained priests, according to the following schedule:

8:00 AM Rev. Canon Francis Altiere
9:00 AM Rev. Canon Benjamin Coggeshall
10:00 AM Rev. Canon Joel Estrada
11:00 AM Rev. Canon Andrew Todd

At 12:00 Noon, following First Masses, Solemn Te Deum and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will be celebrated by the Prior General and founder of our Institute, Monsignor Gilles Wach.

Already many visitors have made plans to come to St. Louis for the Ordinations. If anyone needs information on the accommodations available for this event in various hotels in St. Louis, please contact the Oratory office for the list and the special rates.

As we count down to this great event, I would like to express my deepest, heartfelt gratitude to all the generous volunteers who are working to prepare for Ordinations. The labor required for all the behind-the-scenes preparations can only be sustained by a great love for God and for the sacred. Thank you!

Choir Camp 2013

Many who attend Masses at St. Francis de Sales Oratory remark on the beauty of the liturgy and specifically on the music which is an integral part of the sacred liturgy. Occasionally on special events, such as the Gaudete Gala, many are deeply moved when they see the youthful faces behind the angelic voices. Regular weekly rehearsals are essential to our choirs, but the annual summer Choir Camp we have had since 2009 has been extremely effective in making our choirs what they are today.

Like many good summer camps, the Choir Camp is fun, educational, and beneficial to the individuals who are fortunate to attend it. The Church at large draws a benefit too, in that the Camp helps to prepare a future generation to sing the treasured repertoire of Sacred Music. When they learn it at a young age, the young people’s formative experience in sacred music will stay with them for a lifetime.

Whether you have a camper who will attend the Summer Camp this year or not, we cordially implore you to consider supporting the Choir Camp financially. We cannot minimize the fixed cost of running a summer camp, but if everyone contributes to it, we will be able to lower the cost and provide needed scholarships so that more children can participate.

You may send a check directly to the Oratory, earmarked “Sacred Music Summer Camp”, or use a crowd-funding site we have set up to accept donations.
SEWAGE PIPE REPAIR

There have been an increasing number of sewer backups in the rectory in the past year, flooding the basement with smelly, brackish water. This happened every time there was a large rainfall, so we had a scope put down the drain and it was only able to progress several feet outside the basement, stopping under the parking area which indicated a sewer line break. We employed a sewer repair company to open the area to about a 10 foot depth and a surprising discovery was made that the problem area contained an old brick cistern about 12 feet in diameter and 10 feet deep that had caused some of the problem, along with sewer problems at the building foundation and another collapsed sewer cleanout.

All of the roof downspouts converge on this spot and were overwhelming the collapsed capacity of the sewer. New and larger plastic piping was installed and the hole was closed, hopefully resolving this irritating and unhealthy problem.

STAINED GLASS WINDOW REPAIR

Last November we experienced a strong wind storm which damaged portions of several buildings on campus. A large stained glass window in the sanctuary was one of the damaged items. “Emil Frei and Associates” assessed the damage and provided a report which included the insurance covered storm damage but also the more comprehensive repair of the window to assure its long term health. Scaffolding was recently erected to make these repairs, which will serve as a model for what is needed for all the windows and show how these improvements will sustain and enhance our iconic windows for the future.

Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

From May 5 to May 9 the Institute priests serving in the American Province met at St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis for their annual retreat. Monsignor Gilles Wach, Prior General of the Institute, came to St. Louis to preach to the assembled priests during this time of spiritual recollection and fraternal gathering. These retreats are indispensable for renewing the interior lives of the priests, as well as for the charitable unity among all members of the Institute.

For the community of faithful in St. Louis, this is the fourth time St. Francis de Sales Oratory had the honor to receive the canons for this spiritual event. The Institute is very grateful for the generous hospitality of numerous members of our community who helped us to prepare the rooms at the convent and rectory in which the priests were accommodated.

Thursday evening of the retreat week saw the memorable Solemn High Mass celebrated by Msgr. Wach. On this solemn occasion, Abbé Alex Barga, oblate in the Institute since 2007, and sacristan at St. Francis de Sales, received the Cross of St. Francis de Sales from the hands of our Prior General. Mr. John Ciambrano, until that day a candidate for the oblatehood in Wausau, Wisconsin, received the cassock. Families and friends of our oblates joined our priests and the faithful afterwards in the hall to celebrate with light refreshments at a reception.
Carlson, Archbishop of St. Louis, the Sacrament of Holy Orders will be conferred by His Eminence, Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, at St. Francis de Sales Oratory, on four American Deacons of the Institute: Abbé Francis Altière (Pennsylvania), Abbé Benjamin Coggeshall (Illinois), Abbé Joel Estrada (California), and Abbé Andrew Todd (Louisiana). Our profound gratitude to Divine Providence and heartfelt congratulations go to these four young men.

The joy for the Oratory will be heightened by the fact that this will be a homecoming of sorts, as each of these Ordinands had served in the St. Louis apostolate at least once during their Seminary formation, and each is well-known to the faithful of the Oratory.
We look forward to this magnificent milestone in the life of the Church, in the life of the Oratory, and particularly in the lives of four soon-to-be priests of Holy Mother Church. The solemn Pontifical Mass that day will be offered in honor of Mary Immaculate, principal patroness of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. Let us ask for her intercession for these four Deacons. Please mark your calendars, and be sure to invite your families and friends to an unforgettable event on August 5th.

2013 Priestly Ordinations,
Church of Sts. Michele e Gaetano in Florence, Italy

"O Lord, send us many holy priests!" It is the custom in the worldwide apostolates of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest to add this invocation to the Divine Praises which are recited at each Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. By the grace of God obtained through the prayers of the Institute's family and friends, the numbers of seminarians have steadily increased over the last several years. Of the 80 men who are currently enrolled at St. Philip Neri International Seminary in Gricigliano, near Florence, Italy, in order to become priests for Holy Mother Church, one in every three comes from the United States and Canada. Having participated in the preparatory year of discernment and formation in the Institute's apostolates in the United States, these nearly thirty North American seminarians then proceed over the course of seven years to mount the altar step by step, receiving the various Minor and Major Orders of the Church after much prayer, study, and work in the community life of the international seminary.

With heartfelt gratitude to Divine Providence, it is our joy to announce the upcoming priestly ordinations which will take place this summer in the United States. With the gracious permission of His Grace, the Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of St. Louis, several American deacons will be ordained to the holy priesthood at St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis, Missouri, on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, Feast of Our Lady of the Snows. The Sacrament of Holy Orders will be conferred by His Eminence, Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, during the solemn Pontifical Mass which will be offered on this feast in honor of Mary Immaculate, principal patroness of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

The Institute's Founder and Prior General, Very Reverend Monsignor Gilles Wach, along with the Seminary Rector and Co-Founder, Reverend Canon Philippe Mora, will be present for this special occasion, along with many Canons and members of the Institute family. The names of those to be ordained will be announced in the coming months after the important period of exams and scrutiny which is a necessary part of preparation before Holy Orders.

The Institute is profoundly grateful to all who have offered prayers for these future priests, especially through the St. Philip Neri Seminary Society's program of spiritual adoption by which the faithful pray daily for a particular seminarian. With deep appreciation the Institute likewise is very thankful to all of the generous benefactors of its International Seminary, especially to those charitable persons who have made donations to the special appeal of the St. Philip Neri Seminary Society for the tuition support of needy seminarians who cannot afford this cost.

From May 5-9, all canons of the Institute serving in the American Province will meet again at Saint Francis de Sales Oratory for an annual retreat. Monsignor Gilles Wach, Prior General of the Institute, will come from Gricigliano to preach to the assembled priests during this time of recollection.

The community at the Oratory is continuing to prepare the spacious convent building for this event: Many generous individuals and families are putting in countless volunteer hours by cleaning, painting, repairing etc. in order to accommodate the visiting clergy. This work is important also for the upcoming ordinations in August when the convent will again serve to accommodate our guests.

Abbé Andrew Todd, one of four American deacons ordained in 2013, will visit with our community for Holy Week. He will help the canons with various liturgical functions during this holy season. As with all seminarians' visits, Abbe Todd's presence at the Oratory will once again strengthen the connection between the faithful and clergy in the St. Louis apostolate with the Institute's community life in Gricigliano. Thank you for welcoming Abbé Todd on this return visit to St. Louis, and please continue to keep all seminarians in your prayers.
THE SACRED MUSIC OF HOLY WEEK AND EASTER

Passion of Christ illustration by Gustave Doré

For centuries the sacred texts of Holy Week and Easter have inspired composers to pen some of the most poignant and beautiful pieces in the entire choral repertoire. Likewise, of the immense œuvre of Gregorian Chant, those chants that are specific to the sacred Triduum are some of the most striking melodies sung during the liturgical year. Musically speaking, the whole breadth of human emotion is relentlessly examined throughout the Triduum, from triumphant Latin hymns (Vexilla Regis) to prophetic lamentations (Improperia) from the majestic entrance procession of Holy Thursday to Psalm 21 (Vulgate) sung on a single note in alternatim by two choirs.

Gregorio Allegri composed his famous Miserere for exclusive use by the Sistine Chapel Choir under the reign of Urban VIII in the 1630’s. If not one of the most famous choral pieces of the early Baroque repertoire, it is certainly one of the most popular. The musical form is really quite simple: a harmonization of the so-called ninth psalm tone – the tonus peregrinus; sung antiphonally between choir and soloists. The dramatic effect of the soprano soloists high C isn’t soon forgotten.

The chanted Passion of our Lord according to Saint John is a particularly moving moment in the Good Friday liturgy. The Passion is customarily sung by three singers assigned to the parts of Chronista, Synagoga, and Christus – narrator, synagogue, and Christ respectively. Tomas de Victoria set the text of the turba (crowd) to perfectly match the written chant melody. The effect makes this narration especially vivid. The Gentlemen of the Choir sing the parts assigned to the crowds.

Missa Bel’ Amfitrit’ Altera by Orlande de Lassus is scored for two choirs and brass ensemble. The sonic effect of back-and-forth between the two choirs is impressive; often encompassing a musical range of two octaves. Lassus, for the sake of variety, sets sections of his mass to a smaller more lyrical form; the return of the full choirs and brass after these sections makes for a thrilling effect.

During this winter’s large snow event and the subsequent thaw, the flat roof over the convent extension developed leaks that allowed water to enter the building and cascade into the lower floors occupied by the KIPP school. This roof was not new and was buckling, separating from the wall, cracking and showing other signs of distress prior to the winter.

An inspection showed the need to replace this entire flat roof and, once the weather permitted, the work was undertaken. We now have a solid roof and it has been cleaned of extraneous structures that could pose future problems. The project was completed by the end of March.

NEEDED: BULLETIN ADVERTISERS

The Oratory’s weekly Sunday bulletin is provided by a bulletin service company, J. S. Paluch, which will cover the cost of printing as long as there is sufficient advertising revenue.

Lack of advertisers means the Oratory will be charged to maintain the same quality and volume of copies, starting April 27. To minimize the immediate impact, we have already reduced the number of copies by 25%, but we could use your help in finding more advertisers for our bulletin.

St Francis de Sales Oratory bulletin

If you have a favorite business in the community you live in (restaurants, florists, hardware stores, contractors, professional services, veterinarians, real estate agents, pharmacies, spas and hairdressers, auto repair shops, funeral homes, plumbers, nursing homes, supermarkets, health clubs, and so on), please encourage them to advertise in the Sunday bulletin, or leave the business name and contact information with the Oratory office, and we will forward it to the publisher representative.

The ads may display strictly business information, or include a message expressing support for the Oratory, or for a Catholic cause. The visibility in the Sunday bulletin throughout the year will certainly help the Oratory community stay connected and show our commitment to St. Francis de Sales Oratory as part of this neighborhood. At the same time the year-long exposure of businesses in the bulletin is an excellent way to advertise effectively in this part of St. Louis.

THE BASILICA of Saint Louis, King of France, popularly called the Old Cathedral, is in downtown Saint Louis, Missouri, and sits adjacent to the grounds of the Gateway Arch. This is one of the oldest churches in the region, was once the Cathedral church for half of the United States, the place of consecration of many of the nation's famed churchmen, a church honored by the Popes, and — before the reforms of the Second Vatican Council — was one of the most highly indulgenced churches in the world, having gained all of the privileges of all of the major basilicas of Rome.

But now it is shrouded in scaffolding, undergoing repairs coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the great City of Saint Louis, and the 800th anniversary of the birth of King Louis IX of France — monarch, crusader, and Saint.

On this blog, I often give distances to various churches — and the distance is measured from this church.

These photos were taken a bit more than a month ago, at the end of February 2014. This past weekend, while I was driving past this church, I noticed the gleaming new copper cladding on the steeple, as well as the brilliant shining ball and cross which surmounts it!

For the safety of parishioners and visitors, the entrance is carefully sheltered from the construction work going on above.

Last renovated in the early 1960s, the basilica still retained a certain classical elegance (and this church is extremely popular with brides), although it was becoming rather dingy, with faded carpeting, rough pews, and peeling paint. It was clear that some work needed to be done on this church, one of the most-visited in the Archdiocese — this in part because it is adjacent to one of the world's most popular tourist attractions.

From what I can tell, the interior isn't going to be changed much in form, while some of the coloring will be made a bit brighter. According to the church's website, interior repairs include:

Renovations to the church’s vestibule

Remove all carpeting in the church

Refinish the church’s wood floors, pews, confessionals and communion railing

Clean, repair and restore the mosaic floors of the Sanctuary

Restore decorative millwork and statuary throughout

Plaster repairs, patch and paint walls, ceiling and altars

Updates and repairs to decorative items including the side and rear altars, the baptistery and devotional spaces

New sound system

New lighting throughout the church with special consideration given to artwork and the ceiling

Upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems

New pulpit and altar furniture

Further information on the restoration can be found at: http://www.oldcathedralstl.org/campaign-donations.html

One of the holy water fonts, located near the entrance. Workers, having stripped off paint and plaster, have revealed an older design, unseen in ages.

A closer look at the once-hidden ornament — fleur-de-lys and quatrefoils, both associated with France and the Catholic faith. I have no idea how old these might be.

A door to a confessional and pedestal to a statue sit unused, temporarily. Soon the glories of this church will be renewed.

I donated some of my photography of this church for a fundraising booklet for the restoration, and some of that photography can be found in these articles:

CHARLES LUCAS, second-generation French-American, and a settler in the Saint Louis region before Missouri statehood, owned a considerable amount of land around what is now Normandy, Missouri, which he named after his father’s birthplace.

Lucas was killed in a duel by Thomas Hart Benton, then a rival lawyer and future United States Senator, and the Lucas estate passed on to his brother James, and his sister Ann, who married into the Hunt family. The Lucas-Hunts were very generous to the Church, which led to an astonishing variety of Catholic institutions in the area, the remains of some can be seen in these articles:

Normandy, Missouri - the “Little Rome of the West", part 1
Normandy, Missouri - the “Little Rome of the West", part 2

Part of this former Lucas and Hunt land is now the property of the University of Missouri—Saint Louis, which also owns a number of the formerly Catholic buildings featured in the articles linked above.

Here is the former convent of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (Congregatio Sororum Caritatis a Verbo Incarnato). It is now known as Normandie Hall, on the UMSL campus. The school intends to demolish this building this summer, the reason being that it would cost $11 million to renovate — and only $1 million to destroy.

A news report on this can be found here: Former convent faces demolition at UMSL. A Facebook group hoping to preserve the convent can be found here: Save Incarnate Word Convent + Alumni Center.

This is a shame, but UMSL has a history of rather uninspiring architectural choices, including the destruction of its first building, the elegant clubhouse of the former Bellerive Country Club, as well as the tepid Modernist buildings that punctuate spaces between its vast parking lots. Contrast this with the better architecture found at Saint Louis, Webster, and Washington Universities. Banality drives out the beautiful.

UPDATE: the university decided to save the building for now, and is looking into various proposals for it.Mark S. Canon Philippe Mora
Rector, St. Philip Neri Seminary

This coming Sunday we will celebrate Septuagesima. Below we quote Dom Prosper Guéranger who left us in his “The Liturgical Year” elucidating words explaining the mystery of the three weeks before Lent:

“The Season of Septuagesima comprises the three weeks immediately preceding Lent. It forms one of the principal divisions of the Liturgical Year, and is itself divided into three parts, each part corresponding to a week: the first is called Septuagesima; the second, Sexagesima; the third, Quinquagesima.

All three are named from their numerical reference to Lent, which, in the language of the Church, is called Quadragesima, - that is, Forty, - because the great Feast of Easter is prepared for by tile holy exercises of Forty Days. The words Quinquagesima, Sexagesima, and Septuagesima, tell us of the same great Solemnity as looming in the distance, and as being the great object towards which the Church would have us now begin to turn all our thoughts, and desires, and devotion.

Now, the Feast of Easter must be prepared for by a forty-days’ recollectedness and penance. Those forty-days are one of the principal Seasons of the Liturgical Year, and one of the most powerful means employed by the Church for exciting in the hearts of her children the spirit of their Christian vocation. It is of the utmost importance, that such a Season of penance should produce its work in our souls, - the renovation of the whole spiritual life. The Church, therefore, has instituted a preparation for the holy time of Lent. She gives us the three weeks of Septuagesima, during which she withdraws us, as much as may be, from the noisy distractions of the world, in order that our hearts may be the more readily impressed by the solemn warning she is to give us, at the commencement of Lent, by marking our foreheads with ashes.

Lenten chasuble with the Sacred Heart of Jesus

This prelude to the holy season of Lent was not known in the early ages of Christianity: its institution would seem to have originated in the Greek Church. The practice of this Church being never to fast on Saturdays, the number of fasting-days in Lent, besides the six Sundays of Lent, (on which, by universal custom, the Faithful never fasted,) there were also the six Saturdays, which the Greeks would never allow to be observed as days of fasting: so that their Lent was short, by twelve days, of the Forty spent by our Saviour in the Desert. To make up the deficiency, they were obliged to begin their Lent so many days earlier, as we will show in our next Volume.

The Church of Rome had no such motive for anticipating the season of those privations, which belong to Lent; for, from the earliest antiquity, she kept the Saturdays of Lent, (and as often, during the rest of the year, as circumstances might require,) as fasting days. At the close of the 6th century, St. Gregory tile Great, alludes, in one of his Homilies, to the fast of Lent being less than Forty Days, owing to the Sundays which come during that holy season. ‘There are,’ he says, ‘from this Day [the first Sunday of Lent] to the joyous Feast of Easter, six Weeks, that is, forty-two days. As we do not fast on the six Sundays, there are but thirty-six fasting days …’

It was, therefore, after the pontificate of St. Gregory, that the last four days of Quinquagesima Week, were added to Lent, in order that the number of Fasting Days might be exactly Forty. As early, however, as the 9th century, the custom of beginning Lent on Ash Wednesday was of obligation in the whole Latin Church. All the manuscript copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary, which bear that date, call this Wednesday the In capite jejunii, that is to say, the beginning of the fast …
The leading feature, then, of Septuagesima is the total suspension of the Alleluia, which is not to be again heard upon the earth, until the arrival of that happy day, when, having suffered death with our Jesus, and having been buried together with him, we shall rise again with him to a new life [Coloss. ii. 12].

The sweet Hymn of the Angels, Gloria in excelsis Deo, which we have sung every Sunday since the Birth of our Savior in Bethlehem, is also taken from us; it is only on the Feasts of the Saints, which may be kept during the week, that we shall be allowed to repeat it. The night Office of the Sunday is to lose, also, from now till Easter, its magnificent Ambrosian Hymn, the Te Deum; and at the end of the Holy Sacrifice, the Deacon will no longer dismiss the Faithful with his solemn Ite, Missa est, but will simply invite them to continue their prayers [‘Benedicamus Domino’] in silence, and bless the Lord, the God of mercy, who bears with us, notwithstanding all our sins.”
"The personal relationship which the individual believer establishes with Jesus present in the Eucharist constantly points beyond itself to the whole communion of the Church and nourishes a fuller sense of membership in the Body of Christ. For this reason, besides encouraging individual believers to make time for personal prayer before the Sacrament of the Altar, I feel obliged to urge parishes and other church groups to set aside times for collective adoration. Naturally, already existing forms of Eucharistic piety retain their full value. I am thinking, for example, of processions with the Blessed Sacrament, especially the traditional procession on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Forty Hours devotion, local, national and international Eucharistic Congresses, and other similar initiatives. If suitably updated and adapted to local circumstances, these forms of devotion are still worthy of being practiced today."
Candlemas, the feast we celebrated on February 2, marked the end of the Christmas season, forty days after the birth of Christ. Fittingly, the Church’s liturgy for this feast included the blessing of candles. Canon Raphael Ueda, Vicar at St. Francis de Sales Oratory, was the celebrant and homilist of the Solemn High Mass that day. Here are parts of his sermon:

Light is an image of Christ: the light of the world, a light to the revelation of the Gentiles, according to Simeon’s canticle. In St. John’s Gospel, Christ says of Himself: “I have come as light into this world, that whoever believes in Me may not remain in darkness." Saint Paul uses the same image: “God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Cor. 4:6)

The lighted candle is a symbol of the Catholic life, of the faith and grace of which should shine on our soul. It reminds us that we must bear Christ in us, the source of our life, the author of faith and grace. Faith is the supernatural virtue which is necessary for our salvation. It is a free gift of God and is accessible to all who humbly seek it by surrendering to His will and accepting God’s truth.
We need to see once again with the genuine simplicity of Simeon that faith is light. For once the flame of faith dies out, all other lights begins to dim. The light of faith is unique, for it is capable of illuminating every aspect of our life. Faith is born of an encounter with the living God as old Simeon held the Child Jesus and recognized this Child Jesus as God. God is calling us and reveals His love, a love which precedes us and upon which we can lean for security and for building our lives.
